Recovery after LASIK surgery

In LASIK surgery, your doctor uses a special laser for precise and controlled corneal tissue removal to reshape the cornea. This changes its focusing power, thus correcting your blurry vision.

This is an outpatient minor surgical procedure and is usually completed in 30 minutes or so. Your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic eye drops before surgery, and a ring is placed to keep your eye open. Your eye surgeon will use a laser to reshape the cornea. You wouldn’t feel a thing during the surgery, and your vision dims during the surgery. No stitches are placed.

After the procedure

Your eyes may feel a little gritty, and there may be an itching or burning sensation. Your eyes might be watery and vision blurred, but don’t worry, this is temporary. You will recover your vision soon. Your doctor may prescribe you pain medication or eye drops after the surgery so that you are comfortable and pain-free for several hours. You won’t be able to see immediately after the surgery but will be able to go home the same day.

Recovery

On average, the time for immediate recovery after LASIK surgery is generally six to 12 hours. But this is different for each patient and depends on a lot of factors like how good the vision was before surgery. Usually, most patients can see clearly within 24 hours after the LASIK surgery, but it may take two to five days for many to recover fully. Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment for you within a few days after the surgery to evaluate the healing.

You can plan for other follow-up appointments during the first six months after surgery.

Follow your doctor’s recommendations about how soon you can resume your normal activities.
