Laser (Blade-free) Cataract Surgery

Cataracts cause more than half of the cases of blindness worldwide, and it is a degenerative process that becomes worse over time. However, we can still have them removed and recover our vision through cataract surgery.

Do you need cataract surgery? If that’s the case, what’s the difference between traditional cataract surgery and laser cataract surgery? What will you experience throughout the procedure?

Laser (Blade-free) cataract surgery vs. traditional cataract surgery

There are many differences between the two. Here’s a summary with the most important aspects:

  • The incision: In both cases, an incision should be performed to remove the affected lens and introduce a new artificial lens. This incision is performed with a blade in traditional cataract surgery, or with laser technology in laser surgery.
  • Breakdown of the cataracts: Breaking down the cataract to remove them can be achieved by phacoemulsification in traditional surgery. It is basically vibration with ultrasound frequencies. In laser surgery, the femtosecond laser will help soften the lens prior to removal.
  • Speed: Laser cataract surgery can be faster than traditional surgery as many of the steps are completed by the laser, rather than manually.

There are many options and laser systems available. Each is unique:

  • LenSx: This procedure was the first to be marketed globally and has a very successful legacy. It is available in most countries and has a robust and very accurate technology that allows for precise cuts and procedures.
  • LensAR: It has a special imaging system for the anterior segment of the eye and the lens, and this is integrated with the laser. The system performs a very precise scan of the eye, with a 3-D reconstruction to plan ahead the procedure.
  • Victus: This laser system uses a versatile platform with intelligent pressure sensors and monitors. All of this reduces the incidence of complications during the surgery and improves the outcomes.
  • Catalys: It’s one of the most precise laser systems available. It reduces the dissipation of energy when the lens is being disassembled by phacoemulsification, and it is very stable and comfortable for the operator.
  • Femto LDV: This laser system provides a very high repetition rate and low-energy pulses. With this combination, we can achieve faster and more gentle procedures with very high precision.

As you can see, there are many options and laser systems available. All of them are high-tech and very complex, requiring a demanding level of expertise. That’s why not every medical center offers laser cataract surgery. We’re proud to be the only surgery center in Waxahachie, Texas performing this advanced technique to increase the precision, speed, and visual outcomes of cataract surgery.
