Cataract Surgery

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are the gradual clouding of the eye's natural lens. The leading cause of vision loss worldwide is cataracts. This condition is most common in individuals over the age of 60. During cataract surgery, the eye's clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) in a quick, straightforward, outpatient procedure.

Measurements and Tests

To make sure you get the most appropriate treatment, we use a series of tests and advanced measurements including the following:

  • Tear film analysis evaluates contributing causes of poor vision beyond the cataract itself
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) assesses the health and integrity of your retina
  • Corneal topography maps the curvature and surface of your cornea in detail
  • Pupil size measurement helps determine which lens implant is the best fit for your eye
  • Angle imaging creates a precise image of the angle between your iris and cornea to assess your risk for angle-closure glaucoma
  • Lens density measurement determines the severity and extent of your cataract
  • Wavefront analysis confirms whether your cataracts are the primary source of your blurry vision
  • A-scan/optical biometry measures your eye's length, the distance between your lens and cornea, and corneal curvature to calculate the correct power for your lens implant

All of this information is important to evaluate which implant and procedure work best for you. We will also test your specific need for cataract surgery in the process.

What happens during cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure performed in three steps:

  • The surgeon makes small incisions in the eye to allow the entry of surgical instruments
  • The cataract is broken into pieces by ultrasonic waves and suctioned away
  • An artificial lens, chosen to match your prescription needs, is placed where your natural lens was

Who Are The Best Candidates for
Cataract Surgery?

The majority of patients are good candidates for a cataract removal procedure, with the exceptions of:

  • Patients with feeble health
  • Pregnant or nursing women
  • Patients who are taking certain medications
  • Patients with certain preexisting eye conditions
  • Patients who can’t go through surgery procedures

It is very rare to be ineligible for treatment. Still, if that’s the case, we will discuss all of your available options during your private consultation.

Types of Lens Implants

Before performing cataract surgery, we will make sure to know what type of implant is best for you. There are many options to choose

MONOFOCAL LENS IMPLANTS

This type of implant is designed to adopt a fixed focus, typically set for distance vision. Monofocal lenses may still require use of glasses for better vision in other ranges of distance not covered by the monofocal lens. Unlike the natural lens, replacement lenses cannot change according to the distance of objects in your line of sight which is why you may still need glasses after surgery. Our monofocal lenses are carefully chosen from the most advanced options available, most of them provide excellent image quality and are designed for distance sight.

One example is the Tecnis lens, which is Wavefront-adjusted and offers an improvement in functional vision. This type of lens corrects your vision at a distance and restores nighttime vision.

MULTIFOCAL LENS IMPLANTS

This type of lens is especially useful for correcting Presbyopia, a prevalent condition that affects almost everyone to some degree after age 50. Multifocal lenses are designed to offer an area dedicated for near vision and another for intermediate or distance vision. This reduces the need for reading glasses in recipients.

One example of multifocal IOLs is ReStor. They allow focusing at a distance or nearby objects by making use of light that enters different parts of the eye. They are made with concentric circles, each designed for a separate focus area to stabilize vision at a close range and distance. This type of technology provides more freedom from corrective lenses, making it an attractive option for many patients.

What else do I need to know about cataract treatment?

After a cataract consultation at T|E|C, you'll leave with a clear understanding of the current approach and innovations in the field of cataract surgery and will be able to make up your mind according to your goals and current situation.

Using the results from your measurements, the doctor will explain your options for different sizes and shapes of implants that are compatible with your eyes. All replacement lenses are held in place by haptics, which look like flexible arms attached to the body of the lens.

The incision is made in the white portion of the eye, at the far edge of the cornea. In most cases, these small incisions heal very quickly and do not require stitches. A larger incision may require stitches but also heals appropriately after some time.

After healing completely, your vision is expected to improve significantly. You may still need glasses for some activities. The duration of implants is meant to be for a lifetime. However, there’s a possibility that a secondary cataract will be formed. In this case, we use YAG capsulotomy, a type of laser treatment to make a small opening on the cloudy capsule and regain your vision. The implants will not irritate the eye and are made with acrylic materials and silicone.

What should I expect?

After the procedure is finished, you will be given a series of instructions for your post-operative care. Our team will also show you how to use the eye drops to accelerate your healing process.

Do not rub, scratch, or make pressure on your eyes. Wear a protective shield and do not touch your eyes until they are fully healed. Make sure you have someone to drive you back home because you’re not recommended to drive after the procedure. All of these and other instructions will be handed to you along with your next appointment. Do not miss any follow-up and be sure to call our office if you have any concern or question about your surgical procedure or the outcomes you’re experiencing.
