Who is a Good Candidate for Durysta? – Part 6 of 8

Durysta, or bimatoprost implant, is the newest addition to available treatments for glaucoma . It is the first FDA approved sustained release implant to be used for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). According to studies conducted on Durysta, it is significantly effective in lowering IOP in patients with open angle glaucoma (OAG) and intraocular hypertension (OHT) and can eliminate the need to take eye drops daily. Although Durysta is an effective treatment for OAG and OHT, not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. Doctors need to assess the complete medical condition of each patient to decide their eligibility for Durysta. Here, we will discuss some important factors that affect a patient’s eligibility for the procedure.

Patients with Open Angle Glaucoma or OHT

FDA has approved the use of bimatoprost implants for patients who have open angle glaucoma or OHT. But there are some conditions that can make one ineligible for the procedure even if they have OAG or OHT. For example, if one has an infection in or around the eye, Durysta will not deliver the desired results. Similarly if one is allergic to bimatoprost or some components of the implant, they cannot undergo the procedure.

Patients With a Good Response to Topical Bimatoprost

If the doctor has prescribed topical bimatoprost eye drops to lower the IOP and a patient has had a good response to the treatment, the implant can be beneficial as it helps get rid of the need to take the drops every day.

Patients with No Underlying Corneal Endothelial Issues

If a patient has any underlying corneal issue such as corneal endothelial cell dystrophy, they are not a good candidate for Durysta. As Durysta is implanted in the anterior chamber of the eye, which is the space between the cornea and iris, it can be risky if you have endothelial corneal dystrophy.

Patients Who Have Undergone SLT

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty or SLT is an initial treatment for glaucoma that uses a cold laser to improve fluid drainage. The treatment may not work for everyone or deliver very minimal results. In such cases, patients can opt for Durysta as it is an effective solution to lower IOP.
